Favourite thing to do in science: Making or looking at new materials to try and understand them and see what they can do!
-
About Me: I’m in the 2nd year of my PhD in Trinity and I’m really interested in all things science and technology. And I firmly believe that Game of Thrones, Mad Max:Fury Road, and Dark Souls are the best Tv show, movie and game of the last 5 years.
-
My Work: I make and try to find new applications of two-dimensional materials, which are materials that are less than a few atoms thick, like graphene.
-
My Typical Day: So typically I’d use a furnace at around 1000C to make a 2D-material, then I’d drop some chemicals on it to try do something interesting and then I’d look at it under a big X-ray machine to try and figure out whats going on.
-
What I'd do with the money: If I won the money I would try and partner with the Science Gallery here in Trinity as they work with many artists to better convey science and make it more exciting and accessible for people; hopefully together we could find a way expand the reach of the gallery to some local, and not so local schools.

What are you a cop? Not really.
What was your favourite subject at school?
Chemistry
What's the best thing you've done as a scientist?
Got to go skiing in the Austrian Alps as part of a scientific conference so I’m counting that.
What or who inspired you to become a scientist?
Doc Brown from Back to the Future
If you weren't a scientist, what would you be?
I’d probably want to be an Engineer
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
More wishes, Coffee whenever I want, and the ability to fly.
Tell us a joke.
The optimist sees a glass half full, A pessimist sees it half empty but the chemist sees the glass completely full, half with water and half with air.
